I was watching The Biggest Loser the other night and pretty shocked to see a group of people being labelled, shamed, guilt-tripped for ‘losing control’ and basically being treated in the same judgmental shabby manner as drug users are.
In The Biggest Loser food is seen as the problem and it is the focus of the show, but I treat a lot of people with weight problems resulting from food and sugar addictions, and in my approach it is nothing to do with food or sugar, just as drug addiction is nothing to do with drugs.
In the moment of consuming a big slice of chocolate mud cake, for example, all obligations, expectations and beliefs are temporarily gone, it’s just ‘me and the cake’.
This is a mother of a nurture, straight from spleen to heart, a powerful experience of ‘it’s me, I’m real, I’m home’.
A sugar addiction is an addiction to this state, so instead of focussing on control, the food, sugar or counting calories, all of which just lead to relapse because you will feel fundamentally unsatisfied, I show clients how to recreate that state, that experience, without the food or sugar binges (and their non-beneficial consequences) and how to become fundamentally soul-satisfied instead.
