How to navigate an emotional minefield

by Jost Sauer

If you’re unable to say what you really think or feel on a daily basis, it’s like you’re living in an emotional minefield. This is basically a situation in which interacting with people could, at any moment, trigger intense emotional reactivity. It could be them, it could be you.  It could be with a partner, work colleague, or in the company of friends.

Or it could be all three at once. I hear this all the time from people. That’s a bit too hectic. Being unsure where to ‘walk’ because things could explode at any moment, is exhausting. And if you’re doing that every day it’s damaging, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

If you try and tackle it old-school, which means doing things like improving communication, setting healthy boundaries, taking up positive thinking or affirmations, learning to say no and doing ‘self-care’ strategies, it won’t work. It’s not enough.

I’ve seen a lot of people cutting off all relationships and just hanging out with people who support their views. And while we all need a tribe, resolution has to come from within ourselves. It requires a perspective shift and action mode. Instead of ‘being’ it’s time to get back into ‘doing’.

We’re in spiritual minefield, but that’s a good thing!

The new normal mental landscape (for many people) is filled with inner turmoil. There’s harmful ideologies, trauma, loss and conflicting beliefs.

It leads to personal doubts (am I the one who is wrong?), anger (I can’t forgive the betrayal), confusion and disbelief (wtf is happening, are they all mad?), loss of connection and distress. Every step feels unsafe.

I say it’s a spiritual minefield because spiritual growth comes from uncertainty. Right now the destruction of inner peace is leading to intense questioning. The last few years have blown up everything we thought we knew about the world.

But that was actually everything we thought we knew about half the world! The way forward is in the other half. The invisible half, the spiritual realms, that most of us are unfamiliar with. All those celebrities becoming openly Christian on social media, is not a coincidence. Belief is no longer ‘uncool’ it’s necessary to navigate the minefield.

I like the non-religious way. I use lifestyle, a day that follows nature’s rhythm and keeps part of me always in touch with my cosmic self. Building chi is the ‘doing’ I talked about earlier. Change your day, tap into chi and get it flowing and you get emotional control, you get control of your health, you become actively spiritual. It’s personal, it’s you and your day. It’s time to start exploring the other half of the world.

Alcohol, Alchemy and Addiction   I did a post this week on alcohol, how in Chinese medicine wine can be therapeutic, and then got heaps of blowback such as ‘it’s ethanol and it shrinks your brain’, or ‘it’s toxic and you must never drink’. Since this is a drinking…
If you often say “I’ll never forgive myself for…” or “I’ll never forgive… (fill in person, politician, organisation etc) for..”, you could be creating a mental health issue for yourself. I use the word ‘cosmic’ a lot and people think: hippies, flares, flower-power. But it’s origins are ancient. In Daoist texts there are references to cosmic connection and cosmic chi as well as finding the cosmic self. It’s deeply spiritual but not religious. Cosmic chi is said to shower…
