I’m seeing far too many people who just want to give up on life—especially in middle age and beyond.
The four main ‘give-up’ factors I see are:
Fear, Ageing, Opportunity, and Tech.
Here’s my Chinese medicine-based response to each of them.
Fear: If There’s Fear, There’s a Future
Fear is a natural part of following your purpose. It’s always easier to avoid action—but in Chinese medicine, fear is related to your Kidneys, which also store your Contract with Heaven (your purpose).
✔️ Tip: Boost your Kidney health to blitz fear and become who you really are.
In my clinical and personal experience, fear and dreams share the same space. You can’t pursue one without the other. Facing fear means you’re still in the game.
Ageing: You’re Not Too Old—You’re Just Transforming
“I’m too old for that now” is a myth.
In our 20s and 30s we have pre-natal Jing (TCM talk) or fluid intelligence (neuroscience talk) for quick thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability to act on ideas. But this Jing declines over time leading to overthinking and inability to adapt to new challenges. But we gain something even more powerful: crystallised intelligence or wisdom. Ageing gives us perspective, pattern recognition, and insight. Kidney deficiency symptoms like procrastination or fear can be reversed.
✔️ Tip: Strengthen Kidney energy with lifestyle, daily routine, and anti-ageing herbs.
Opportunity: It’s Not Over—It’s Just Starting
“The door has closed, it’s too late for me now, ” — also untrue.
In Chinese medicine, in the Jing cycle as we age, specific energies become available that weren’t accessible earlier in life. Neuroscience backs this up: the brain’s pattern-recognition abilities peak between 70–80 years of age!
✔️ This is the opportunity of your lifetime to really make the most of our life and leave with a big positive impact on others but also our own soul evolution.
Tech: Learn to Work With It, Not Against It
“It’s going too fast. I can’t keep up. AI is scary. I miss the old days.”
This is a biggie. Tech is here to stay so we need to find a way to learn about it, and keep up with it, and to widen our cognitive horizon. This is the function of the Heart, so for this one we need to learn how to improve our Heart function.
✔️ Tip: Strengthen your Heart to widen your cognitive horizons.
